Nostalgia in millennial art making
Millennials: a generation obsessed with looking back. Processing their childhood. Analyzing it. Demonizing it. Idealizing it.
The aesthetic of the mid-80s to the early 2000s are immortalized, creeping into everything they create.
Sometimes it’s twisted, gaudy, obnoxious. Sometimes it’s reverent, sacred. Sometimes it’s abusive. Sometimes it’s all of those things at once. Sometimes it feels like home.
These artists are using the visual culture that raised them to communicate their identity, the likeness of a diverse and complicated generation.
References to happier times that maybe weren't so happy after all. But they are ours. They belong to us, collectively, as a generation.
As a millennial, I see these visual references and I connect, immediately. Whether the message is celebratory, contemplative, turbulent, or uncomfortable, I am among friends. I may not have shared this experience, but I speak this language. In a way, this art belongs to me. It is a part of my own identity. These artists are processing the millennial experience and I can navigate, consume, and participate in that process on my own terms as a collector.
