Marilyn Parker was an undergraduate arts major at Purdue University and focused her graduate work at The Ohio State University on literacy and children’s literature with an emphasis on the arts. She was an elementary school educator for 34 years. In Columbus Public Schools, she was involved in Arts Impact and CGAC’s Artists in the School programs. At Columbus School for Girls, she was a teacher, librarian, and administrator, inviting arts groups, authors, poets, illustrators, and artists to enrich her students and colleagues. She actively returned to art upon her retirement when she discovered her love for metal smithing and jewelry making.

“Movement, color, versatility, and sense of whimsy are important to the pieces I create. I want my work to make wearers feel cheerful and stylish. I use mainly silver, vintage lucite and Bakelite, and Murano glass beads. But, I also enjoy experimenting with other materials, including rubber, pop can aluminum, resin, brass, and copper. I am inspired by the materials themselves and by the simple forms I observe in my environment. My goal is to create comfortable, timeless, and attractive jewelry that you will enjoy owning!”

My name is Jill Barnett, and it is my greatest joy and honor to model and photograph my dear friend Marilyn’s gorgeous jewelry! I have known Marilyn since 1978, when she began teaching at Columbus School for Girls, where I was a preschooler. She was CSG’s fabulously creative librarian throughout my elementary school years, and we had a close, special bond. I eventually became a teacher and delighted in reading my students the same magical books she had read to me when I was a little girl. Years later, when I developed spinal diseases, which have led to multiple surgeries and cause neurological and mobility issues, I reconnected with Marilyn and our relationship effortlessly blossomed. She is my dearest friend and a constant source or love, sunshine, and support. Our friendship is the biggest gift to me, and it means so much to be able to help show you her beautiful work!
